Cork-based IT equipment recycler Wisetek has opened a new facility in the US at Winchester in Virginia.

Over the past 12 months Wisetek has expanded from a single US facility to a footprint that now covers Austin, Texas; Milford, Massachusetts; Sacramento, California; and Washington, DC. The company expects to employ a total of 200 staff in the US by the end of 2019.

Wisetek has the largest fleet of mobile data destruction vehicles in the country and now provides customers with a complete nationwide service for on-site data destruction, IT removal, reuse and recycling services.

Globally, 14.5 million items have been recorded and processed through Wisetek facilities to date, with over $1 billion in components recovered for both client and internal use.  The company says circa ten million disk drives have been certified as erased or destroyed.

Chief executive Sean Sheehan (pictured) said: “We are very pleased with our progress to date in the United States. There is a clear opportunity to scale our business and respond to a market that has a genuine need for IT asset disposal and data destruction services in a controlled and environmentally responsible manner.

“We are currently processing more than 20,000 devices daily within our US facilities, and the addition of our new locations will significantly increase this number.”

Enterprise Ireland’s Julie Sinnamon added: “Irish companies are known the world over for innovation, flexibility and the competitive advantage. Wisetek typifies the growing success of Irish companies internationally, and particularly in the USA, where almost 800 Irish-owned companies operate across all 50 states and are employing more than 100,000 people.”

Wistek received taxpayer funding of €790,000 from Enterprise Ireland between 2012 and 2017.
