Volvo has unveiled the new S90, the marque’s new flagship saloon.  Priced from €48,400, the S90 is the latest model to be built on Volvo’s all-new Scalable Product Architecture platform and benefit from Volvo’s Drive-E powertrains.

Adrian Yeates (pictured), managing director Volvo Car Ireland, said: “Our transformation doesn’t lack ambition. SPA was designed around safety, which is a fundamental value at our global design team. The new platform contributes to a better weight distribution, which will assist with handling. The use of high strength boron steel used extensively throughout resulted in a strong, compact structure.”

Yeates added that Volvo Car Ireland enjoyed 30% year-on-year growth in 2015, with a further 40% uplift through Q1. “The strong growth underpins the strength and sustainability of Volvo’s ongoing operational and financial transformation both locally and globally,” said Yeates.

“Sales performance is a key metric of success but it indicates a more compelling measure of success for me, which is that drivers who are predisposed towards leading German brands are now actively considering Volvo as a credible and stylish alternative.

“I believe Irish people are turning to Volvo for product and promise reasons. We are a boutique car maker that offer the very best Scandinavian design rooted in simplicity and attention to detail on the things that matter, such as safety and driving experience. This comes with no compromise on performance or innovation, and the growth we have experienced is a direct result of this.”

Pilot Assist

Pilot Assist, Volvo’s innovative semi-autonomous drive feature, is standard on every S90. It automatically keeps you at a set speed or distance from the vehicle in front, braking and accelerating with the flow of traffic, and gives gentle steering inputs to keep the car within lane markings at motorway speeds up to 130kph. Unlike previous versions of the system, it no longer needs to follow another car.

The latest version of City Safety is also fitted to every S90. This includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, and the world-first application of large-animal detection. This feature helps to avoid or limit the severity of collisions with large animals such as deer or horses both at night and during the day.
