Skyactive is Mazda’s term for efficiency and refinement within its vehicles, and it covers everything from platforms and engines to transmission systems, writes Olive Keogh.

The new Mazda2 comes with a choice of three thrifty 1.5-litre Skyactive engines, one diesel and two petrol with different outputs. Prices for the range begin at €15,995. In the past, the Mazda2 has been overshadowed by big-selling players in the segment such as the Fiesta and Polo.

But this latest version is going to give them a run for their money, with its combination of space, refinement and comfort.

It also boasts class-leading fuel consumption (the diesel does around 83mpg), low tax bands across the range and cutting-edge technology, including Mazda’s MZD Connectivity system. The Mazda2 is also good-looking and the boot capacity is a substantial 950 litres with the seats down.
