Des Cannon, Managing Director of Gowan Distributors, tells Olive Keogh that the Peugeot 508 is making inroads with fleet buyers and a new flagship is on the way in 2016

What was Peugeot’s biggest selling model in 2015?
For cars it has been the Peugeot 2008 compact crossover closely followed by the Peugeot 208. For vans, the Partner range. We’re currently enjoying the youngest Peugeot model line-up ever.  In 2015 we launched the new 108 micro car, the new 208 compact hatch, the new 508 family / executive model, the new Partner van and the new 3008 car-derived commercial. As a result, we’ve seen a volume increase of 29%. Our fleet car and van range have also seen strong growth, with sales of the new 508 and Peugeot vans up 57% and 50% respectively.

What’s Peugeot’s best executive buy?
The Peugeot 508, with its class-leading 1.6 120bhp BlueHDi diesel engine. Both saloon and SW estate models are incredibly well priced, from €27,250 plus delivery, with high levels of standard equipment in comparison to other brands. The 508 Allure has full leather upholstery, front and rear parking sensors, rear camera and 18” alloys.

What new cars are on the way in 2016?
The new Peugeot 208 will have its first full year of sales in 2016. Other newcomers include the new 308 GTi 270bhp and our new 508 RXH flagship model. Of particular interest to fleet buyers will be the 508 RXH 2.0 BlueHDi diesel automatic, with 180bhp, 119g CO2 and annual road tax of €200. It is derived from the SW estate 508 and is loaded with equipment. We will also have very big news in relation to a new Peugeot SUV in late 2016.

What is your most economical model?
The 208 diesel 5-door hatchback. Driven in real-world driving conditions of over 600km it achieved an average fuel economy of 100km/2.7 litres (104.5mpg).

What are the priorities driving sales?
Buyers are still making purchasing decisions very much based on low running costs, warranty cover, cost of finance and levels of equipment. We offer a five year Peugeot warranty across all our car range and finance rates from as low as 2.9% APR.

How is Peugeot innovating?
Peugeot’s revolutionary new 1.2 litre PureTech petrol engine range is a major innovation. These PureTech petrol engines are so highly efficient that they can now compete with diesel engines on fuel consumption.  Furthermore, new automatic gearboxes from Peugeot are now matching and even surpassing their manual counterparts for performance and therefore qualify for the same annual road tax.

Secondly, the unique Peugeot iCockpit interior, with ergonomically positioned controls, a small size steering wheel for improved driver control and a unique head-up instrument panel. It is now found in 208, 2008 and 308 models.
