Irish startup HireUp is hoping to make recruiting easier for employers, as it launches a cloud-based platform to streamline internal referral programmes.

Founders Nathan Doyle (25) and David Maloney (25) are computer science graduates from UCD and are running the business from Sandyford in Dublin. “We aim to be a disruptive force in the recruitment industry by increasing the percentage of employees hired through referrals,” says Maloney. “Our initial focus is Ireland and the UK, though we are already engaged with three multinationals.”

The founders note that it is often difficult to get employees to engage with company referral programmes. Among the main obstacles cited are the lack of an end-to-end process, not enough automation, lack of transparency regarding how a contact introduced is progressing through the hiring process, and inconsistency in the incentives and rewards on offer.

“The HireUp team have built a cloud-based platform that delivers HR recruitment managers a complete business solution for streamlining an employee referral programme, making it incredibly easy for employees to engage with and be effective with their referral programme,” Maloney explains. “And it all comes as an easy-to-use app that is available for both Apple and Android phones, as well as on desktop.”

HireUp recently secured Enterprise Ireland Competitive Start funding of €50,000, which Maloney says will be used to ramp up sales in Ireland and the UK. They also qualified as one of EI’s High Potential Start Up cadre, which could net them an additional €250,000 in funding.

HireUp also earned a place in the Dell global entrepreneur programme, which gave them access to Dell’s R&D laboratory, mentorship, non-recourse funding and international contacts.

Companies signing up to use the HireUp platform decide the value of a referral bonus for a specific job vacancy. HireUp charge 30% on top of the employee referral bonus and there are no costs if a referral is not recruited.

Tom Early, EI’s HPSU start manager, is impressed with HireUp’s proposition. “HireUp is an innovative and unique approach to recruitment, allowing companies to leverage their existing workforce as a means of attracting a higher quality of talent,” he said. “We are delighted to work with them to help them progress and develop their business even further.”
