Irish startup MyDealDoc is through to the European finals of the ‘Talent Unleashed Awards’ in London, the winners of which will be selected by a judges’ panel that includes Richard Branson and Steve Wozniak.

Now in its fifth year, Talent Unleashed is an awards programme that recognises outstanding startups and entrepreneurs that demonstrate technological innovation.

The European regional finals will be held on July 21 in London, where winners will be announced. The European winners will then compete against regional winners from across Asia-Pacific at the global finals in Sydney, where Steve Wozniak will be present to provide direct feedback.

The grand prize winners in each category will win one-on-one time with Steve Wozniak and a tour of Silicon Valley’s leading tech companies.

Mobile Apps

MyDealDoc is a startup with two mobile apps currently live in the Irish market, BabyDoc and TippleDoc, which have been downloaded over 75,000 times.

The BabyDoc app finds the consumer special offers on everything from nappies to wipes to baby equipment, as well as providing other baby-centric content. The company’s TippleDoc App focuses on the beer, wine and spirits shopping category, again providing details on outlets offering discounts.

MyDealDoc founders David Keenaghan and Mike Morrissey were working as chartered accountants in KPMG when they decided there was a business opportunity in special-offer apps. They launched TippleDoc – originally called BoozeDoc – in 2014. The app is free and the startup garners revenue from advertising.

Mike Morrissey said: “Our apps are about people getting a bargain. TippleDoc is not about getting the cheapest bottle of wine but about getting a €20 bottle of wine for €10.”

MyDealDoc got off the ground through private investment from a family friend, while various mentors helped shape the Dublin-based business.

Keenaghan said that he and Morrissey were thrilled to make it to the European finals in Talent Unleashed. “We’ve been making a lot of waves in the Irish market and given the knowledge base on the judging panel it’s such a boost to get this recognition. We’re focused on UK expansion so this is a welcome stepping stone,” he added.

MyDealDoc is backed by Enterprise Ireland, who put €25,000 into the firm, and has won a number of awards, including ‘Best Digital/Online Startup’ in the Bank of Ireland Startup Awards 2015.
