Blacknight, the Carlow-based internet domain registrar and hosting company, has signed a deal worth €4m with BT Ireland, which will see the telco provide Blacknight with data centre, network and infrastructure services.
As part of the multi-year deal, Blacknight will relocate a large part of its data infrastructure to BT’s data centre environment in Dublin’s Citywest.
Blacknight, which provides servers, co-location services and cloud-based Windows and Linux applications, will use BT’s integrated telecoms and IT services to help it grow its business throughout Europe and beyond.
Commenting on the deal, Michele Neylon (pictured), CEO of Blacknight, said: “This is a significant investment for Blacknight, which will enable us to completely refresh and enhance our data infrastructure and expand our network capacity.”
In 2013, Blacknight built its own data centre at its HQ in Carlow. Finance for the data centre, estimated at €1 million, came from Blacknight’s own resources, equity investment and loan facilities from Bank of Ireland and AIB.
Peter Evans, director of wholesale and strategy at BT Ireland, added: “In a complex market and an increasingly cloud-based economy, BT is uniquely positioned to bring telecommunications and IT services together in one streamlined solution.
“Blacknight’s multi-year commitment to BT services is a testament to our ability to deliver resilient and reliable data services and connectivity that our clients can trust.”
Blacknight is also launching a summer recruitment drive for vacancies in software development, customer service, marketing and sales. It has already advertised two positions: sales manager and software developer, with more to follow in the coming weeks.
Michele Neylon said that the expansion reflects the company’s continued growth, which has seen it introduce a number of new cloud services in addition to its established range for businesses large and small in more than 130 countries.
New products include Microsoft Office 365, a website builder, and tools for digital marketing and social media management. The company recently achieved ISO 27001 certification, and is a fully accredited domain registrar with ICANN.
Neylon is pulling out all the stops to attract staff, pointing out that the company has worked hard to create a positive environment. “Our staff canteen is completely free, offering a choice of hot meals for lunch, including vegetarian and healthy options. We have free tea, coffee and fresh fruit available throughout the day,” he said.
Neylon added: “Our staff are professional, friendly, knowledgeable and resourceful. Some of them are stylish as well — but that’s not why we hire them!”
