Three new iPhones and a revamped smartwatch were revealed by Apple in its annual product launch in Silicon Valley.
The new phones include bigger and more advanced variations on the pricey iPhone X, launched in 2017. Apple also unveiled a budget version of the iPhone – the first in five years – called the iPhone XR.
There isn’t much difference in terms of dimensions between the iPhone XS and the X, while both also have the Super Retina displays.
The Series 4 Apple Watch, meanwhile, has a bigger screen and promises better connectivity, as well as more health-focused apps.
The XS comes with three storage options – 64GB, 256GB and the new 512GB version. It also houses the faster A12 Bionic chip, which Apple says is the first seven-nanometre chip in a smartphone.
The phone provides faster Face ID, better stereo sound and a new gold colour device option. Apple’s impressive dual 12 megapixel rear camera setup in the iPhone X has also been retained in the XS.
The XS Max, meanwhile, has the same new chip, storage options, cameras and high-def but bigger screen.
Apple claims that the battery in the iPhone XS will last on average 30 minutes longer than the battery in the iPhone X, which should keep it operational for more than 18 hours per day with moderate use. The iPhone XS Max’s battery should add another 90 minutes onto what the iPhone X could muster.
Apple’s new top-line iPhones also come with a handy dual-sim function, allowing users to have two different mobile carriers and phone numbers operational on the same device.
Finally, the iPhone XR device offers a lower-spec option than its siblings, with a 6.1-inch LCD screen. It is very similar in spec to the iPhone 8, although it also houses an A12 Bionic chip. It also ditches the dual-camera setup for a single 12MP lens and comes in a variety of bright colour options for its aluminium (not steel, like the other two new phones) casing.
Customers will be able to pre-order iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max from Friday, September 14, with availability beginning Friday, September 21.
Prices for the XS start at €1,180 through Apple’s website, while prices for the XS Max start at €1,280.
The iPhone XR will be available in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB models, starting at €879 through the Apple website. Pre-orders for the iPhone XR will be taken from Friday, October 19, with availability beginning Friday, October 26.
The new Apple Watch comes with edge-to-edge, bigger screen options – either 40mm or 44mm.
The series four Apple Watch also packs a faster processor and a speaker that is 50% louder than that of its predecessor.
There are no changes to the battery life in the new watch, which means that it should last for around 18 hours after a full charge.
LTE connectivity is an optional extra with the Apple Watch 4, while the device’s health/fitness-tracking apps have been improved. They now include a heart monitor, although this function is initially only accessible by users in the US.
Prices for the watch start at €439 on Apple’s website. It can be pre-ordered from September 14, with availability from September 21.
