Boston-based 3D printer maker Markforged is to hire 100 people over the next three years after opening a European HQ in Dublin as part of its global expansion plans.

Markforged is an industrial 3D printer manufacturer, building “affordable machines that print high-strength materials, such as carbon fibre and MIM metals”.

The new office marks the first phase in the global expansion that Markforged referred to when raising $82m in a Series D round in late March.

Global vice president Darcey Harrison said: “Launching our Dublin operations is a huge milestone for Markforged as we look to strengthen our business overseas. Our experience working with IDA Ireland has been nothing but exceptional – we’re thrilled to be joining such a thriving tech community with such support.”

IDA Ireland chief executive Martin Shanahan added: “The decision by Markforged to locate their European headquarters in Dublin again confirms Ireland’s reputation as the premier location for fast-growing, innovative companies to build and support their future international growth.”

Deloitte has named Markforged as the 10th fastest growing technology company in North America, while Forbes selected the firm for its ‘Next Billion Dollar Startup’ list. The company says it shipped  2,500 industrial printers in 2018.

According to co-founder and chief executive Greg Mark (pictured): “Markforged set out to change the pace of human innovation by enabling engineers, inventors and manufacturers to print industrial-grade parts at a fraction of the time and cost of traditional methods.”

Long the sphere of prototyping and short run production, 3D printing has been almost prohibitively expensive at industrial scale, but Markforged says its range of 3D printing patents has enabled it to offer printers that change this paradigm, bringing higher output and mass production within reach in cash terms.
